What types of positions are the City currently filling?
The City is looking to add all levels of Heavy Equipment Operators to our Public Works, Waterworks, and Parks, Recreation and Tourism departments!

What division would I work in within the City?
Equipment Operators are essential to the City’s operation and function in many of our divisions!

• Wastewater
• Solid Waste
• Street Maintenance
• Stormwater
• Landscaping

What does an Equipment Operator do?
• Operate a variety of equipment not limited to:

o Dump trucks
o Front-end loaders
o Hydro seeder
o Knuckleboom truck
o Excavator
o Dozer
o Rollers
o Sweepers
o Truck with trailer
o Backhoes

• Perform preventative maintenance
• Follow safety procedures

Equipment Operator Levels and Salaries:

Level/Salary/Qualifications
Equipment Operator A $28,000-$48,000 Requires 1 year of work experience in the operation of Class I or Class II equipment in a similar or closely related environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equipment Operator B $30,000-$51,000 Requires 2 years of work experience in the operation of Class I and Class II equipment in a similar or closely related environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equipment Operator, Senior $32,000-$54,000 Requires 2 years of work experience in the operation of Class II and Class III equipment in a similar or closely related environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equipment Operator, Master $36,000-$63,000 Requires 3-5 years of work experience in the operation of Class II and Class III equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equipment Operator Specialist $39,000-$67,000 Requires 5 - 7 years of work experience in the operation of Class II and Class III equipment and 1 - 2 years of lead or supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

We can help with that! The City of Newport News will send you through training with one of our approved vendors to obtain your license! You just need to complete the permit portion of the test through DMV prior to employment!
