Job Description:What would a typical day on the job be like — what work would I do?

As a Juvenile Detention Specialist, you would be responsible for the care, custody, discipline, and overall safety and security of juveniles assigned to various programs within the Juvenile Services Department. The goal of the Detention Specialist is to have a safe and smooth operation of the Detention Center.
A typical day would include monitoring clients’ eating, exercising and working activities, enforcing discipline, and escorting clients to court or family meetings. Some Specialists may participate in programs created to help at-risk clients, such as life skills and substance abuse workshops. You would also be conducting incoming and outgoing orientation, which gives you the opportunity to see the full life cycle of the process. There is also some administrative work that will require paperwork and logs to be completed, and in some circumstances you may be subpoenaed to testify in court.

How much money can I make?
In the Juvenile position, you could make a competitive salary ranging from $36k to $63k annually depending on education, qualifications, and experience. In addition to salary, the City provides a comprehensive benefits package to meet all of our employee’s needs!
What are the qualifications for this position?
This position requires an Associate’s Degree and 2 years of closely related work experience, preferably with juveniles, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
An acceptable comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state, and sex offender criminal history check as well as FBI Fingerprinting; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required. In addition to a background check, this position requires pre-employment medical evaluation, PPD, and substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Individuals in this job classification cannot be listed as having a founded child abuse or neglect complaint.
There are a few certifications that must be maintained in crisis intervention techniques (verbal and physical such as
‘Handle With Care’), First Aid and CPR.
The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situation.
